Description:
The design of the OEM Turbo model rear spoiler (which was also available as a limited accessory for a time from Nissan) fits the styling of the early 300ZX-Z31 very well, but Nissan stopped making them decades ago. Nissan built them with a metal inner framework covered with molded foam rubber. While this did make them especially durable against impacts and similar damage, they tended to not hold up very well over the years. Water often found its way into the framework causing it to rust, which in turn pushed the spoiler away from the body (and often times warped or damaged the foam rubber from the inside). Almost all used ones we've found had some level of this damage, which made finding a sample that was good enough to use for reproduction incredibly difficult. We were finally able to locate one, and worked with our local supplier to produce this updated version of that original Nissan spoiler. We configured it to work with the rear wiper arm, and were even able to impress the 'NISSAN' logo from the original spoiler into the fiberglass mold! Like the later Z31 factory spoilers, this version of the 84-85 OE Style Rear Spoiler is made of high quality fiberglass, and comes ready for prep and painting. It bolts on to the deck directly using 5 included bolts in the same positions as the factory 84-85 Turbo (and OEM accessory) spoiler (drilling not required when replacing a factory/dealer installed spoiler; see Fitment Note for 86-89 models).

Factory & OEM Accessory Spoiler Note:
Nissan’s OEM Spoilers for the Z31 coupe models, among others, were “open” on the underside. As a result, it was necessary that they were attached to the deck lid using two extra studs along the rear for proper holding due to the weaker open-bottom design. Our spoiler instead features an enclosed underside, which reinforces the structure of the spoiler, provides a more secure mounting surface, and removes the need for the 2 rear mounting points entirely. Also, for Non-Turbo 84-85 & 87-89 Z31 models (that did not originally have a spoiler, and therefore have no drilled holes), using the two additional rear mounting points would require cutting into the underside of the deck lid for access, which is far more complicated than the 5 simple holes on top. For 84-85 Turbo, all 1986 models, and 87-89 Turbo (all of which do have the 7 original drilled holes), you will need to seal the two rear extra holes when replacing an OEM spoiler (simple hardening sealant is recommended, like our E6000 in Related Items).

*Fitment Note:
This spoiler will physically fit any 84-89 300ZX coupe model deck lid. Modification is required for use on 1986 coupe models, which require that the third brake light be retained (this spoiler does not have the cutout that the 1986 version has). Additionally, 1986 models use a different rear wiper arm that does not match the angled recess on top of this spoiler (does not affect fitment but will look odd). Lastly, 86 models may need to drill new mounting holes for proper fitment. 1987 and later coupe models can use this spoiler with the original rear wiper arm, but may also need to drill new mounting holes if a factory spoiler was installed.

*Spoiler Shape Note:
While this spoiler will physically fit any 84-89 Z31 coupe, it does not match the shape of 1986 and later models. For 1986, it does not have the third brake light cutout, and the rear wiper recess is shaped differently (as noted above). The overall shape of the spoiler is otherwise very similar to the 1986 version. 1987 and later models received a taller deck lid spoiler which extends up the sides of the rear window on the ends, and has an angled slope starting at the bottom of the rear window trim that levels off once it reaches the height of the ends.

Protective Coating:
This fiberglass item has a gel coating to protect the fiberglass itself from scratches. It is not a finish coat. Your paint professional will sand down the coating prior to final priming and painting. You will notice scratching in this surface, which is exactly what it was designed to do, to take any scratching that can occur in production, transport, storage, handling, and shipping, keeping the fiberglass from being damaged. Please let us know if you have any questions.
