  • (1) Right (Passenger) Side Bumper End Cap, Rubber

Description:
This genuine, original equipment (OEM) "C" shaped rubber end cap fits over the forward end of the passenger (right) side metal bumper end. Originally installed from the factory on Japanese and pre-production models (as well as some non-North American exports) the rear bumper rubber end caps were not included with models that were exported (even though they are shown on the original North American microfiche). Over time, these end caps can harden or become brittle with age, allowing them a degree of free play in the best cases, and falling out in the most extreme. Sold individually; see Related Items for the driver's (left) side.

Interestingly, there appear to be multiple lines of thought regarding the original purpose of these end caps and why most exports did not receive them. One of these suggests that they were purely aesthetic finishers for the rear bumper, which could further set apart Fairlady Z models from those sold outside of Japan. Another is that they were removed from exported models to cut down overall production costs for early models. Perhaps the most interesting (and possibly concerning) theory is that these end caps were intended as a safety feature for pedestrians due to narrow roads in Japan that often times put traffic and pedestrians in close proximity (which is why only the rear bumper received them) and early bumpers protruding from the body somewhat. Unfortunately, the actual evidence that would confirm both why there were included for Japanese models and removed from exports has yet to me located. Regardless of what their original purpose truly was, they are a good aesthetic option for those aiming for an authentic JDM appearance.

Image Note:
The images on this page show the passenger (right) side rubber end cap from several angles in order to show as many details as possible. Some of the images have the thin side closer to the camera to better show details of the top side; however, those images do not reflect proper installation. The thin side is originally positioned towards the top when installed on the car. Attempting to install with the thin side toward the bottom will prevent proper fitment of the bumper. Please refer to the installed images on this page for proper fitment. You can also call us at (714)639-2620 or Email us if you have any questions.

Installation Note:
When installing, the "thin" side of the end cap fits toward the top; see installed images for reference. These end caps were originally designed to simply slip on to the end of the bumper, between the bumper end and the quarter panel. The slot on the outer facing side matches the "point" of the bumper end, and the formed back side fits into the recessed area of the body. The formed back and slotted front are all that was used to secure these in position; no adhesive or hardware was used from the factory. 9/74 and later models with "large" factory bumpers do not have the recess behind the bumper due to the different bumper style used in later year S30 models; see note below if you are converting your Z to early style bumpers. Whether you are installing on a 70-72 model or modifying for your later model, these end caps are easiest to install when the bumper end is removed from the car.

73-78 Bumper Conversion Note:
OEM bumper end caps will not fit with bumper conversions on late 1974 and later Z-Cars, even when OEM Nissan bumpers are used, without modification to the end caps, the rear quarter panel, or possibly both. The late model body does not have the same recess required for proper fitment. If you are modifying to use these on your car, adhesive is strongly recommended to help ensure they stay in place. For 1973 and early 1974 models, it may be possible to use these as is when factory 70-72 bumpers are installed; will not properly fit with factory 1973 or early 1974 model bumpers.

Lightweight Bumper Note:
Our fiberglass and carbon fiber bumpers were not developed with these bumper end caps in mind. Additionally, we have not test fit these with our lightweight bumper options at this time. The same restrictions for bumper conversions noted above will still apply with lightweight bumpers. Extra modification or components may also be needed to use these end caps with lightweight bumpers.
