Description:
Rebuilding the valve lifters in your 300ZX-Z31 is fairly complicated and only takes away from the time you can be driving your Z even more, so we recommend replacing with new whenever possible. This quality replacement hydraulic valve lifter is a great alternative to the discontinued originals. Sold individually; 1 required per valve (6 per cylinder head; 12 total per car).
Nissan switched from Solid Lifter configurations to Hydraulic Lifters with the last year of the 280ZX Turbo, and continued using them with 300ZX models. In the VG30 series engines, these lifters fit between the camshaft and the rocker arms (earlier L6 engines had the camshaft press on the rocker arms directly). When working properly, the new configuration operates quieter and smoother compared to earlier design. Additionally, hydraulic lifters perform lash adjustments constantly, meaning one less maintenance task to perform.
While they are quite reliable and essentially maintenance free, it is a significant amount of work to repair should they start to go bad; this is one of the reasons why it is best to keep up with your regular maintenance (oil changes specifically) and use a high quality oil that is suited to your engine. Valve lifter "ticking", while common in many Nissan engines, is also the earliest sign that your lifters are starting to go bad (note that the sound doesn't mean they are going bad; it's simply the earliest sign you will see). Eventually this noise can turn into poor performance, misfiring, or eventually internal damage such as burnt valves.
