Description:
A properly functioning and correct temperature thermostat is critical to ensure your engine not only runs properly, but also efficiently. Too high of a temperature rating (or sticking closed) can lead to heat soak, vapor lock, and overheating. Too low (or sticking open) and your engine may struggle to reach operating temperature, resulting in poor fuel economy. Alternatively, higher temperature thermostats can help engines reach operating temperature faster (especially in cold areas) while lower temperature thermostats can help engines stay cooler for longer. Engine conditions, performance modifications, and even climate can all change what thermostat temperature is ideal for your Z (high efficiency radiators often work best with higher temperature thermostats when used as a daily driver or in cooler ambient areas, as an example). Gasket and hardware not included; see Related Items.
Temperature & Usage Note:
This thermostat is designed to open at 82°C (~180°F), which Nissan specifies as the replacement in "Standard" conditions. Generally, this temperature can be used on stock to mildly modified engines run in most areas where particularly hot or cold ambient temperature is uncommon (most unmodified engines). It can also be used on medium performance builds in colder areas where warmer ambient temperature is uncommon, or as a cooling system upgrade in engines that tend to run on the cold side. In the majority of cases, it is not suitable for use on race prepared engines or higher performance builds without extensive cooling upgrades including a very high efficiency radiator (consult your Race Engineer before using this thermostat in your performance built engine).
