Description:
The Radiator Cap serves as a type of protective valve and a seal for your Z's cooling system. It is designed to remain closed while the engine is at regular operating temperatures, which allows pressure to increase within the cooling system (which keeps coolant in liquid form). When pressure in the cooling system rises beyond a specific point due to increased engine temperatures, the valve opens and allows coolant to flow out of the radiator into the overflow. A bad radiator cap can lead to engine overheating and coolant leaks, among other issues. Inspecting both rubber seals and pressure testing the cap with every oil change is a good way to prevent failure down the road.
