Description:
This reproduction of the OEM factory decal is located on the inside of the glove box door, towards the driver's (left) side of the lid opposite the Tire Information Decal. The key codes were written on the decal by hand prior to fitment on the inner glove box lid, and could be used to have replacement keys made in the event all of the original keys were lost (either through Nissan or a local locksmith!). Note: Since the codes were hand-written for each car individually, this decal will not have any codes when you receive it (see Code Notes below).
Code Notes:
Key code decals were applied after each car was assembled, unlike most other decals which were either installed during vehicle assembly or applied to parts prior to assembly. All key codes consisted of 4 numbers; later codes added the letter 'M' to the front of the numbers. Additionally, very early production 240Z's usually had more than one code, as some locks used different keys. If you have lost your decal, or the locks on your car have been changed without updating the decal, the lock cylinders themselves normally have the correct code on them if they are originals or Nissan replacements.
Image Notes:
Images on this page showing installed decals show original decals on especially low mileage Z-Cars. The first installed images (illuminated with the glove box light) show an example of installation in a 240Z; the last installed images (not illuminated) show a 280Z. Different lighting affects the color in the photos on this page as well; the decal itself is slightly off-white in actual color as shown in the first image.
Positioning Note:
Unlike the majority of decals, the Key Code Decal does not have a precise location where it installs beyond "on the glove box inner lid" (although there are limited instances of decals being fitted elsewhere, they were always attached inside the glove box originally). They are normally fitted on left side of the inner lid, and toward the "lower" (rear) edge. For 280Z models, they were placed in the same area within the inner lid's recess. Since they were installed after the fact, they were often fitted at varying angles and differing spacing from the edges of the lid (especially on 240Z models due to the flat inner lid).
Note:
Beware of scanned copies of these early Z decals on some internet sites. The reproduction decals we offer are either the actual reproductions commissioned by Nissan for the Restoration Project (most 240Z decals), made by the same supplier that Nissan commissioned, or made by specialist suppliers (typically in Japan). We will only offer the best available option when it comes to these decals, not cheap or low quality copies!
