Description:
U-Joints are a type of pivoting, rotating joint that allows the Half Shaft to continue rotating at the different angles caused by suspension articulation. When worn or insufficiently lubricated, they can cause both clunking* and vibration while driving or changing gears. A bad joint can usually be confirmed simply by moving the half shaft in several directions (they won't move at all when the joints are good). This replacement u-joint is a great option for your original, worn out pieces. Each includes a lubrication fitting for easy servicing. Sold individually; 2 required per half shaft (4 per car). U-joints should always be replaced in pairs. Don't forget to replace worn out boots and hardware on the rest of your Half Shaft! See Related Items.
Note:
Building a high performance engine or race car? We strongly recommend upgrading to Heavy Duty U-Joints instead! See Related Items.
280ZX Axle Note:
This U-Joint is only used on 280ZX models equipped with Half Shafts. Not for use on models equipped with CV Axles. Unfortunately, accurate information regarding which years and sub-models received which axle type is no longer readily available. From the records we have (including several versions of the Nissan microfiche and parts books), all R180 differentials originally came with Half Shafts, as did early R200 models. Non-turbo coupes were supposed to use Half Shafts throughout 280ZX production (to 1983). CV Axles were officially first put into use on turbo models starting at production month 12/80. 2+2 models show them first being used at production month 9/81 (R200 only). Despite this, evidence indicates that 2+2 models may have seen them as early as 1980 production year. As always, it is best to confirm on your car directly whether you have Half Shafts or CV Axles prior to ordering.
*Driveline Clunking Note:
While u-joints can cause clunking in in Z-Cars, they are not the most common culprit of the symptom. In most cases, the differential mount is the cause of movement that results in the well known "rear end clunk" (and particularly hard/loud clunks most often when shifting gears). See the differential mount for your car in Related Items for more details.
